Fear and hunger is a survival horror rpg game made by Miro Haverinen also known as Orange or Happy Paintings, a game developer from Finland. The first game was made in 2018, the game is set in a medieval setting with the focus being on the dungeon of fear and hunger itself, a sprawling never-ending dungeon where people go in and never come out.

The game was designed almost solely by Miro. In an interview[1], he stated that the idea for the game was born during his school days when he would propose morally awkward hypotheticals to his classmates that would all take place in a morbid dungeon. From a game development standpoint, his inspirations were games like Silent Hill, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Nethack, Souls games, and Mortal Kombat.

We are not here for game development though, I am particularly interested in this game series because of its art style as in my opinion, the game has a heavy focus on aspects of old masters within portraiture without even realising it.

Below is a screenshot I have taken from the 'Fear and Hunger Discord', this discord has Miro the game developer, who talks frequently about his inspirations. This screenshot answers a question about his art inspirations. One of his game inspirations, Berserk has no real artistic inspiration but instead, his sources come from Ayami Kojima and Yoshitaka Amano, renaissance, and impressionism.

In my study I chose to copy the portrait painting process of Fear and Hunger with the thought process of breaking down how Miro paints. I chose to use one of my dnd characters for this study. Miro works with dry media photoshop brushes and a 'no blending' technique from what I could gather from the few videos where he documents his workflow.

Left is my study, right is the character portrait of Marina (Fear and Hunger 2) 2022
